GOING GREEN

How to have an eco-friendly salon

  • Buy natural and organic products only

    • Use ammonia-free colors to offer a cleaner and healthier way
    • Use formaldehyde-free products for straightening
    • Use sodium-chloride (salt or sulphate) free shampoos, which are modified to natural ingredients, which in turn allow the hair to retain their natural oils and help increase viscosity of the shampoo without stripping color from the hair
  • Use pumps instead of aerosol containers
  • Use non-toxic products for disinfecting and cleaning
  • Start a recycling program: Placing recycling bins to separate the waste and dispose of it correctly (receive free of charge at www.recyclepointsbh.com)
  • Re-use packaging of beauty products used
  • Use a cloth that you can wash and re-use instead of disposable paper towels
  • Put a plant in your facility: produce oxygen
  • Help make your location a better place by cleaning the streets and litter
  • Say good-bye to paper, and hello to digital agendas
  • If you must use paper, switch all of your paper (stationary, flyers etc.) to 100%  post consumer recycled paper
  • Ask clients if they would like a receipt before printing
  • Give used magazines to other organizations, friends, charity
  • Seal your facility. By sealing openings you conserve energy
  • Install blackout curtains to save energy and decrease carbon emissions
  • Tint your windows to block out UV rays and the heat
  • Have a water cooler with re-useable cups (glass) or paper cups for recycling, instead of using disposable water bottles
  • Offer your clients organic snacks and drinks (smoothies/carrot sticks)
  • Have all staff carpool in one car! Not only is it better for the environment but it will ensure that everyone reaches on time, at the same time
  • Remember 2nd hand doesn't mean 2nd best!
  • Never throw away old computers, electronics or rechargeable products (i.e. clippers) call the manufacturer and ask how to dispose of it correctly
  • Audit your energy (know what your using to know what to save)
  • Turning off lights & water faucets when not in use
  • Change bulbs from incandescent to fluorescent (CFL-last longer and uses less electricity)
  • Install motion sensors in rooms
  • Install a programmable thermostat
  • Unplug things when you finish using them or turn off the outlets
  • Use rechargeable batteries
  • Make sure you put a full load in the washing machine/dish washer
  • Install a dish washer to clean all items efficiently and effectively
  • Line dry your laundry
  • Implement solar energy systems, only has a high initial cost, but the maintenance & repair is close to nothing!
  • Promote going green and raise awareness!

Don't forget you can re-use and re-purpose almost anything! It can be a fun arts & crafts activity!
